Computer Malware – Protecting Yourself Against Trojan Viruses
Trojan viruses are a form of computer malware or virus that requires action by the computer user or another malware program in order to spread to other computers. They will disguise themselves as a useful files or programs and then infect your computer when opened or downloaded. They will normally take advantage of security vulnerabilities in operating systems or web browsers in order to further exploit the computer being attacked. Once a trojan virus is established on a computer, it may download additional computer viruses and spyware.
Danger of trojan viruses
Trojan viruses are normally created in order to allow a hacker to gain access or information from a computer system. The manner of control can range from gaining full control to simply transmitting a user’s login and password information to a remote website. Other malicious actions that trojan viruses have been known to conduct are: 1 -gaining full remote control of the targeted computer, 2 – using the infected computer to attack other computers, 3 – stealing private information from the infected computer (passwords, bank information, etc), and 4- download of additional computer malware.
How does a computer get infected by trojan viruses?
Trojan viruses use a number of methods to infect targeted computers. Typically, they guise themselves as a useful file or program that the end-user manually opens or installs on their computer. The following methods are all known to have been used by them to infect computers: 1- peer to peer file sharing (infecting mp-3’s, movies, etc that are shared on-line), 2 – infected email attachments, 3- infecting “cracked” software programs, 4 – active x controls on malicious websites, and 4 – using security exploits in web browsers, instant messenger programs, and music software.
Using anti-virus tools to remove trojan viruses
For most computer users, they will want to use an updated anti-virus program to remove a trojan from their computer due to the complex nature of the malware infection. The microsoft malicious software removal tool is a freely available anti-malware program that is updated monthly against the latest trojan virus threats. Many times a trojan virus will disable the well-known anti-virus programs offered by companies such as symantec. If the installed anti-virus program is functional, the updating the virus definitions and running a complete scan of the computer’s local drives is the best means to remove a trojan virus.
